We are compiling this directory of flowery burial grounds from across the UK, which we would recommend visiting if you are looking for a well managed site rich in wildlife and heritage. Burial grounds can have a rich array of plants, animals and fungi, and may contain the only surviving area of flower-rich grassland in a parish. All the sites listed here contain this habitat. To see the flowers at their best, late May to mid or end of July is usually the most suitable time to visit. However, do contact the site managers for more specific timings before you visit if this is important to you.
St Michael's Church, Llanfiuhangel Genau'r Glyn is sited at the head of a scenic valley overlooked by a wooded slope, with the graveyard occupying two distinct areas around the church. The older churchyard stretches upward behind the church into the surrounding woodland, while a newer churchyard situated below the church extends into the valley floor. There is a management plan in place which aims to maintain a balance between the people who visit the churchyard and maintaining the biodiversity of the area. The mature trees in the upper graveyard create an ideal environment for many common birds, insects and plants, while butterflies and bees are attracted to the wildflowers in the more grassy areas, particularly in the lower churchyard. Like many churchyards, Llanfihangel Genau'r Glyn has an ancient yew tree which can be approached along a level path beside the church. Among the monuments there are memorials to master mariners and farmers as well a mausoleum commemorating a young ballerina. There is a complete survey of the gravestones available on the Llandre Heritage website Monuments in the Churchyard Llandre Heritage The graveyard is a place of peace and quiet and provides an opportunity to encounter the wildlife and biodiversity of the area.
With the graveyard being situated on a hillside several of the paths in the upper graveyard are steep and uneven. Part of the lower graveyard is also on a steep slope and care must be taken when visiting. The upper graveyard is reached by a stepped walkway from the carpark. There are several benches in the graveyards
The 512 bus between Aberystwyth and Ynyslas stops in Llandre, a short walk away from the church
