Find a Flowery Burial Ground

We are compiling this directory of flowery burial grounds from across the UK, which we would recommend visiting if you are looking for a well managed site rich in wildlife and heritage. Burial grounds can have a rich array of plants, animals and fungi, and may contain the only surviving area of flower-rich grassland in a parish. All the sites listed here contain this habitat. To see the flowers at their best, late May to mid or end of July is usually the most suitable time to visit. However, do contact the site managers for more specific timings before you visit if this is important to you.

We have a large burial ground, which has been closed for burials for over 120 years.  A large number of old gravestones offers shelter for all year round floral interest.

We have a large number of trees, Copper beech, Yew, Lime, Oak, Thuja, as well as wild Primroses, Snowdrops in the Spring.

People of the village tend to use the churchyard as a place for contemplation and peace, but many local dog walkers use the paths.  The ground is maintained by Lenham Borough Council, grass cutting and weeding, which sometimes causes conflict in nature conservation.  We are, however, in constant negotiation with LBC to prevent them cutting all grass and leaving some wild areas.

We keep bees, a swarm of wild honey bees were introduced to one hive in Spring 2024 and we have manged to keep them throughout the winter.   We installed a second hive this Spring, but as yet have not attracted any residents.

In the church, we have bats, and on recent survey Common Pipistrelles and Natterer bats were recorded.  These obviously leave the church building at dusk and feed on insects in the churchyard.

Messy church built a bug hotel a couple of years ago, and we have boxes for owls in the trees.
