We are compiling this directory of flowery burial grounds from across the UK, which we would recommend visiting if you are looking for a well managed site rich in wildlife and heritage. Burial grounds can have a rich array of plants, animals and fungi, and may contain the only surviving area of flower-rich grassland in a parish. All the sites listed here contain this habitat. To see the flowers at their best, late May to mid or end of July is usually the most suitable time to visit. However, do contact the site managers for more specific timings before you visit if this is important to you.
St Michael’s Church is at the head of a picturesque valley where a small stream runs steeply through the woodland. The graveyard and woodland are rich in biodiversity and there are short walks introducing visitors to the natural, cultural and creative heritage of this site.
The lower graveyard (about 2 hectares in size) is sensitively managed and has both spring and summer meadow areas.
The church is associated with a holy well believed to have healing properties and with a very old yew tree, approximately 1,800 years old. It may therefore have been a much older early Christian or pagan site.

A Church heritage trail makes its way up through the extensive hillside graveyard providing a wonderful walk. In addition to the heritage trail, a poetry trail starts from the Lychgate and leads up into the woods and returns to the church. The 17 poems all have been written by local people and some of those authors have links with the strong tradition of the Welsh National Eisteddfod.
This church is part of the Peaceful Places trail which highlights hidden gems to discover across North Ceredigion https://peaceful-places.com/welcome
The lower churchyard is on a gentle slope with access to car parking at the bottom and has good accessibility.
The upper churchyard around the church can be accessed by parking either down the bottom where there are many steps up to the churchyard or there is a small parking area right outside the church. The majority of the upper churchyard is steeply sloped and wooded with narrow unsurfaced paths.
Benches with back and arm rests are available in the churchyard.
Baby changing facilities are available in the church.
Wheelchair accessible toilet in Church
Hourly bus (number 415) service from Aberystwyth; bus stop 300 yards from Church
